After concluding a limited engagement at the Guthrie Theatre in September, The Scottsboro Boys is looking to start performances at Broadway's Lyceum Theatre in October, according to The New York Times.
The Scottsboro Boys features music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, a book by David Thompson and direction and choreography by Susan Stroman. It uses the format of a minstrel show to explore the infamous “Scottsboro” case of the 1930s, in which a group of African American teenagers was unjustly accused of attacking two white women, and the boys' attempts to prove their innocence. The Scottsboro Boys depicts one of the most important and notorious chapters in the history of the American Civil Rights movement.
The Scottsboro Boys played at off-Broadway's Vineyard Theatre earlier this year, running from March 10 through April 18, 2010. The original musical was recently honored with the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical.
